In Memoriam
Betty passed away peacefully in Nanaimo with her family by her side. She is survived by her daughters Meghan and Lindsey Shaw, granddaughter Blayne Maust, and great granddaughter Kinsley Causton. She is predeceased by her husband Blaine Shaw, parents Glen and Linda Dishaw, and sister Joyce Wilson.
Raised in Milo, Alberta, Betty always appreciated her connection to the prairies even as she spent her life in BC, where she attained her BA in Home Economics from UBC and joined the Varsity Outdoor Club. Betty taught high school in 100 Mile House and Prince George. She and Blaine, a pilot, lived and raised their girls on Haida Gwaii. After Blaine lost his life in a helicopter accident, Betty and her daughters later moved to Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. There she volunteered with the Civil Air Search and Rescue Association (CASARA), The Canadian Cancer Society, Nanaimo School District and Global Village, and was part of outdoor and birding groups.
Betty lived a full life with many wonderful and close friendships and was a loving and supportive mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will be missed and remembered by her family as a clever, caring, and thoughtful person.
A memorial service is to be held in spring 2026 at First Memorial Funeral Services in Nanaimo. In lieu of flowers, please consider a small donation to North Island Wildlife Recovery or an animal charity of your choice.
