Stephanie Huen and Chang Li are the co-founders of Abacus Studio, a start-up furniture retailer based in Vancouver. Huen has always been passionate about social change and Li has always been fascinated with innovation. Together, they founded Abacus as a sustainable alternative to the furniture equivalent of “fast-fashion.” With nine million tons of unwanted furniture going into landfills every year, Huen and Li believe that now is the time for affordable, environmentally friendly home furniture. Unlike most furniture retailers, Abacus works on a subscription model. Subscribers get fast delivery and assembly and the ability to return or swap furniture for low upfront costs. Huen and Li believe this innovative economic model suits the nomadic lifestyle of a new generation of young professionals.
