In Memoriam

Daryl C. Rankine, BHE'53
December 9, 1931 - June 19, 2022

Daryl Caroline Rankine, the daughter of Douglas and Mabel Muir, was born in Vancouver on December 9, 1931. Daryl grew up in West Point Grey, attending elementary school (Queen Elizabeth) and then Lord Byng High school, graduating in 1949. She decided that she would like to become a dietitian and entered the Home Economics program at UBC, graduating in dietetics in 1953. Following an internship at the Toronto General Hospital, she completed her professional qualifications. She met her husband (Fred Rankine), who was in the RCMP on the UBC campus, on her return home, and they married in 1957.

Fred went back to university where he obtained his BEd, MEd, and finally his Doctorate of Education. Upon his completion of studies the family moved to Fredericton, NB, where he had found a position teaching at the University of New Brunswick. During a sabbatical year in 1975 at the Western Michigan University, Daryl earned her Master of Arts with honours, and followed that in 1977 with a Bachelor of Education from the University of New Brunswick.  After a number of years raising their two boys, Daryl returned to work as the director of Nutrition for the province of New Brunswick. In this position, she was able to expand the programs and develop the school lunch programs. Upon retirement in 1994, they returned to the West Coast, living initially in Tsawwassen before moving to Tapestry on the Endowment Lands and finally to Berwick on the Lake in Nanaimo.

She is survived by her two sons David (Katherine) and Graham (Linda), and grandchildren Ian and Colin. Daryl enjoyed touring by car and camper and did a number of trips across the country and through the States with her husband. Also, she became very interested in genealogy and researched the family’s history as far back as she could. She was proud of her family and took pleasure from their accomplishments and adventures. The family would like to thank Berwick on the Lake for all their support and compassionate care.
