In Memoriam

Gwendolyn (Lynn) Dick, BEd'60 BLS'64
April 24, 1926 - March 16, 2023

Lynn passed away peacefully at home on March 16, 2023. She was a scholar, an outdoors person, and a beloved wife of 63 years. She travelled extensively with her husband, Charles (PhD, California), often embarking on long and dangerous bicycle trips or hiking with a backpack. Together, they covered over 170,000 kilometers on bikes and many thousands of miles on foot, exploring countries such as New Zealand, Australia, China, India, most European nations, as well as North Africa, South Africa, Nepal, and Mexico.

Their longest trip, spanning 121 days, took them from Fairbanks, Alaska, to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. They also embarked on a 57-day journey from Beijing to Hong Kong and a 53-day expedition from Kathmandu to New Delhi.

Not only was Lynn an accomplished land tourer, but she was also a skilled offshore skipper. Alongside her husband, she sailed the coast, and, with two other skippers, she embarked on a journey from Seattle to the Bay of Islands in New Zealand. While her partners continued their second journey around the world, Lynn encountered severe storms that caused their boat to be knocked over twice. They sought shelter in a little-known atoll for a week, along with seven other boats, to make necessary repairs.

Lynn had a profound love for wildlife, actively supporting numerous wildlife organizations. She also made major contributions to organizations dedicated to assisting the needy and less fortunate. She was indeed a great lady, and her absence will be deeply felt by those who value intellect and compassion.

“Gone forever but forever in our hearts.”
