I’m currently an associate professor of Creative Writing on UBC’s Okanagan campus and have a new novel out called The Double Life of Benson Yu. It’s about a man confronting his past by telling a story of himself as a twelve-year-old and a strange man he meets named Constantine, who believes himself to be a reincarnated story. As the story progresses, we learn that Benson is hiding a darker story. I wrote the novel to examine the kind of lies we tell ourselves to survive and, in that process, how we can turn our abusers into our heroes.
About this book, Charles Yu, National Book Award-winning author of Interior Chinatown, had the following to say: "A nuanced, complex, and highly original novel, equal parts harrowing and illuminating. Kevin Chong's language is endlessly readable, bursting with pain, humor, and invention. Remarkable."
