Tell us about your job.
As the Vice President of Online Operations at Indigo, I am responsible for the development and implementation of strategic projects that deliver revenue growth, while managing the costs and productivity of Indigo’s Online and Mobile sites. The work to increase efficiencies and improve the end-to-end digital customer experience encompasses many areas, including user experience, customer service, product management, and transaction fulfilment.
What was your first job after graduation?
I worked as an auditor in KPMG’s downtown Vancouver office. Met some great people and friends, and took full advantage of KPMG’s global footprint by experiencing life in the UK for 3 years, then 3 years in M&A advisory in Toronto.
What would you tell your graduating self?
Work hard, and work with pride. Both career and learning opportunities are not always obvious. And be patient.
What was the best advice that you received?
Not advice so much as following a role model – my father (also a UBC Commerce alumni). He worked hard and found success in his career – and he was always well respected and liked amongst his peers. Respect is key.
Did you ever have an ‘aha’ moment in regards to your career? What was it?
I was working very hard in one job, but struggling to get ahead. Once I switched jobs – still maintaining the same work ethic – my career path accelerated. Working hard is important. But if you’re struggling too much, you may be in the wrong job.
Looking back at your career, if you could go back in time, what would you do differently?
Nothing. Even the mistakes that I have made have helped me to learn and grow.
What quality do you think is the most important thing for people entering the world of work to have?
A hard work ethic, and a positive attitude.
