Class Acts
Our society continues to send our young men and women into harm's way. Many of them wear military uniforms, others wear the various uniforms of first responders. Too often, they are unprepared for the trauma that their profession will deliver. And they have inadequate access to the treatment programs necessary to help them and their families.
The Road to Valour is my personal initiative to support Wounded Warriors Canada (WWC), a mental health service provider for veterans and first responders. As a veteran from a family with a long history of military service, I have experienced firsthand the effects of generational trauma and PTSD. My grandfather, a decorated WWI engineer, suffered from what was then called Shell Shock. With no treatment available, he turned to alcohol, passing his trauma down through generations to me. I also have been diagnosed with a service-related operational stress injury. Tragically, I passed the trauma on to my daughter. She struggled with severe mental health issues and took her own life in 2022.
To raise awareness and funds for WWC, I will embark on an unsupported 2,500 km bicycle ride departing from Vancouver on my 75th birthday (May 21, 2026) and arriving in Winnipeg on Canada Day. I will personally cover all operating expenses, ensuring that every donation directly supports WWC programs, including those that help the families of affected veterans and first responders.
