In Memoriam
On May 14, 2022, Edwin Conde Landale, aged 73, passed away from cancer. He is survived by his daughter, Audrey Landale.
Edwin, also known as Conde or Ed, was born in Vancouver in 1948 to Phyllis and Alec Landale. He first studied philosophy at UBC, then changed course and became a salmon fisherman with his first wife Zoe, as described in Zoe’s book Harvest of Salmon.
Fishing piqued Edwin’s interest in the sciences. After graduating with a BSc from UBC in 1980, he completed his PhD in microbiology and immunology in 1987 at the University of Miami. He met his second wife Nancy Hamlett at a microbiology conference, and they lived in Swarthmore, PA, where their daughter Audrey was born.
Later, Edwin moved back to the West Coast and returned to the family farm in Whonnock, B.C. For the rest of his life Edwin judiciously divided his time between Whonnock and Savary Island, both of which he loved.
Edwin was a superb historian with a fascination for genealogy. In 2002, he founded the Savary Island Heritage Society (SIHS), which is dedicated to preserving the history of Savary Island.
If desired, donations in Edwin’s memory can be made to the SIHS by contacting savaryheritage@gmail.com.
