In Memoriam
Dr. Ping Wah Chan passed peacefully in August 2021 at the age of 84. He graduated from UBC with an MSc, and PhD in plasma physics in 1966. The first in his family to pursue tertiary education, he made the journey from Hong Kong to Vancouver in 1962. He was ever grateful for the opportunities offered at UBC, including the generous scholarships, without which he would not have been able to follow his dreams. He continued his lifelong passion for physics, holding posts at Colorado State University, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University until his retirement. He was most proud that his eldest grandchild, Stephanie Chung, also graduated from UBC, with a BA in speech science in 2019 and an MSc in speech language pathology in 2021.
