In Memoriam

Peter Smiley
Peter Smiley, BSc’64, MD’68
April 24, 1942 - October 5, 2022

After a courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease and atrial fibrillation, Peter passed away at the age of 80 years.

Peter graduated from Kitsilano High School, where he was president of the student council in 1960. After graduating from UBC, Peter continued his education at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, IL, where he completed his internship, surgical residency, and a two-year fellowship in colorectal surgery. He joined the surgical centre in Portland, Oregon, in 1975 as a proctologist serving Emanuel and Meridian Park hospitals. He was an invaluable support to anyone with medical difficulties.

He frequently returned to Vancouver to see his family and lifelong friends, many of whom were former Meralomas football players. Indeed, his ties to Vancouver were so strong that one of his daughters chose to be married there.

Peter was an avid golfer, a voracious reader, and an invincible crossword puzzle solver. He had a commanding presence and a sharp wit. He worked hard, and he played hard. He was a loving and proud father of four children and grandfather of five children. His legacy will live on through the memories he created and the lives he touched.
