In Memoriam

Karoly Charles Deminger
Karoly Charles Deminger, BSF’59
August 9, 1935 - May 18, 2022

In 1956, when the Hungarian Revolution broke out, Charles made the decision to flee Hungary for a better life. With his 450 classmates and 50 professors from Sopron University, he crossed the border into Austria. The group sent out a plea to 20 countries looking for a country with an established forestry school. Canada answered their call, and UBC opened their doors to them. The Sopron Foresters graduated from UBC between 1958 and ’61. Charles graduated in 1959, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Forestry (Graduate Forest Engineer). His career was spent working in the woods from Powell River to Franklin River to Port Hardy, and finally to Squamish.

In Squamish, Charles worked for Weldwood as a Divisional Engineer Forester. Charles loved the woods and loved his job. He was most at home on TFL (Tree Farm Licence) 38. Charles worked at Weldwood/Interfor until his retirement in 1995.

Charles loved playing tennis with his partner Frank, fishing, gardening, woodworking, and making wine. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 57 years, Kathy. They spent 53 of those years living on Garibaldi Way in Squamish. Charles and Kathy were proud members of the Hungarian-Canadian communities of Squamish and Vancouver. In memory of Charles, enjoy the forests around Squamish.
