April 13, 1933 - June 15, 2021

Edward Howden Knight, aged 88, of San Marcos, California, passed away on June 15, 2021.

Ed was born in Vancouver on April 13, 1933, and was the only child of Edward Allen and Helen Blackley (née Howden) Knight. He grew up in Vancouver with a large extended family and many close lifelong friends.

He attended UBC from 1951 to 1956, and was a member of Phi Delta Theta, graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce and Diploma in Hospital Administration. He began his career as the hospital administrator for the Prince Rupert General Hospital from 1958 to ’61; he then accepted an administration position for the Red Deer General Hospital in Alberta from 1961 to ’72. It was in Red Deer that he met and married the love of his life, Glenda, in 1964. After having three children, Carolyn, Patricia, and Edward Brett, he moved the family to Calgary to take a job as executive director of the Calgary General Hospital in 1972, where he stayed until he retired in 1988 to start his own consulting business.

Ed was the recipient of the Queen’s Silver Jubilee medal for worthy and devoted service within the hospital sector, an honour nominated by his associates. Throughout his life he was actively involved with The Rotary Club. As a member of the Rancho Bernardo Club, he took part in fundraising and writing grants for clean water access, healthcare for women and children in Ecuador, and the Rose Bowl Parade Float.

Ed also loved to travel and had been to many countries around the world – China, Russia, and Australia, just to name a few. He made it a point to travel somewhere every year. He was an avid reader and philanthropist. Ed will be remembered as a kind and honourable man with integrity.
