Tik Maynard, BA'06

I graduated from UBC in 2006 with a degree in History. Since then, I’ve spent my life immersed in horses — as a competitor, trainer, and writer. My new memoir, Starting in the Middle: How Horses, Those Who Study Them, and 265 Minutes with One Colt Helped Me Find Myself at Midlife, will be published in April 2025 with Trafalgar Square Books.

Starting in the Middle follows my journey of self-discovery, from conversations with animal behaviour experts to one pivotal experience: working with an untouched colt for 265 minutes at the World Championship of Colt Starting in Lexington, Kentucky. That moment changed everything.

While it’s rooted in the horse world, this memoir is really about transitions, identity, and the courage to reimagine your path — at any age. And earlier this year, I was honoured to win the 2025 Road to the Horse Championship, marking my second consecutive title.

I’m grateful to UBC for laying the foundation that continues to shape my perspective — and my storytelling.
