David Richard Kim Sigurdson, BA'75
March 16, 1953 - October 13, 2023

Kim was born and raised in Vancouver. He slipped away quietly on October 13, 2023, after a short battle with Covid. He was 70 years old.

Kim graduated from Grandview Elementary in 1966 and Britannia High School in 1971. In 1975, Kim graduated from UBC with a BA in European History.

Kim excelled in all sports through school. He was an avid athlete in tennis, badminton, and bowling. From a very early age, Kim was exceptionally artistic and skilled at building models. Kim painted accurate designs on World War II model planes and miniature military figures. He enjoyed war gaming. His recall of military battles was legendary.

Plans and dreams change as we age. Kim gave up his dream of working as a military historian to bring his mother's dream into reality: Kim and his mother Joyce opened Rupert's Place in October, 1976. For 40 years, they built a highly successful printing/tag bindery business. Kim retired in 2016 due to kidney disease, which landed him on the Kidney Transplant List.

Kim was an unforgettable character who, within a few minutes of association, became someone who could be trusted. His word was his bond.

Kim was extremely hard working, honourable, articulate, witty, highly educated, and well travelled. He was a humble man who carried heavy burdens with dignity. Kim touched the lives of many and will be remembered with love and respect. He always made life a little better for those around him. Kim faced his illness bravely.

The world is a sadder, emptier place without Kim. Thank you for sharing the road of life with me. He is survived by his cousin, Katherine Lawrence, BA'75 & Professional Teaching Certificate'79.
