Most Famous Alum

Round 4 recap: Who is UBC's most famous alum?

With the Round 4 results now in, we now have the four category champions heading into the semifinals.

Arts, Culture, and Media became a question of which two legendary Canadian media personalities from different generations would advance: an interviewer whose unique style continues to captivate online audiences—or a celebrated author, journalist, and broadcaster who helped popularize Canadian history through books and television?

While Nardwuar garnered especially strong support on Instagram, Pierre Berton ultimately prevailed.

Similarly, in Health, Science, and Technology, scientist and conservationist Suzanne Simard and mental health expert Gabor Maté were matched as bestselling authors and influential public communicators. Simard also performed particularly well on Instagram, but Maté pulled ahead in the end.

With the categories now crossing over, Maté and Berton will be paired in a matchup.

In Politics, Business, and Community Leadership, Justin Trudeau faced his closest contest yet. Former Prime Minister Kim Campbell captured 31 per cent of the vote—the strongest showing against Trudeau so far.

Trudeau now goes on to face the overall strongest performer in this competition to date: Rick Hansen.

Hansen secured the Sports, Athletics, and Recreation category over Doug Mitchell, whose leadership has had an enduring impact on Canadian sport and student-athletes through philanthropy.

The competition now enters its final stretch with a revised voting schedule.

Voting for Round 5 opens at 9 am PT on Monday, July 20, 2026. The results will be announced and voting for the final round will begin at 9 am PT on Wednesday, July 22, 2026.

The winner—and the answer to the question, “Who is UBC’s most famous alum?”—will be announced on Friday, July 24, 2026.
