A Conversation with Dr. Bonnie Henry: How the Invisible Infrastructure of Public Health Offers Hope in a Pandemic

Dr. Bonnie Henry, British Columbia's Provincial Health Officer and Clinical Associate Professor at UBC, has been a trusted public presence throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. She has delivered daily updates and level-headed leadership, reassuring public concerns and demonstrating her vast experience as a public health expert who has been at the forefront of the Ebola and SARS epidemics. Her public messages resonated with British Columbians and have become a defining characteristic of the province’s swift response to the disease.

Hear from Dr. Bonnie Henry and Dr. Dermot Kelleher, Dean of the UBC Faculty of Medicine, as they explore the meaning of public health, and how many of its lesser-known aspects are crucial to how we respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. What is the bigger picture of public health in BC and Canada? How do centres of research excellence such as the School of Population and Public Health at UBC work to improve public health? What have we learned about public health during this pandemic, and how can we use this knowledge to keep us safe as we continue with our COVID-19 response? Moderated by Kathryn Gretsinger, MJ’06 – Senior Instructor, UBC Graduate School of Journalism; Senior Faculty Advisor to UBC President.

This is the seventh webinar in our COVID-19 series.
